The Vérités de Lapalisse were created in 1922 by the candy-maker Jean Sauvadet living in the town of Lapalisse in the Auvergne region. He played on the homonymy Lapalisse, the name of both his hometown and a famous French marshal: Jacques de Chabannes, named “seigneur de La Palice”, who served Charles VIII, Louis XII and devoted his life to François 1er. He fought in the wars of Italy and died at the battle of Pavie in 1525. In order to celebrate his courage, his soldiers had composed a song ending with these ludicrous words: “Monsieur de La Palice is dead. Dead in Pavie. If he were not dead, he would still be alive.” In the 18th century, a French academician named Bernard de La Monnoye composed a song to ridicule the poor Jacques de Chabannes. The 52 quatrains that Bernard de La Monnoye wrote were a succession of obvious and naïve words that made fun of the marshal. Twenty-four of those quatrains were used by the candy-maker Jean Sauvadet who printed them inside of each candy wrapping. He himself decided to write a quatrain that is featured on each metallic box, just below the portrait of Monsieur de La Palice. The story of the French marshal had such an impact that “c'est une vérité de Lapalisse” became an expression to use when something obvious is being said.
